South Sudan Emergency Situation Update

18 February 2014

The number of refugees crossing into Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda increased in the last week, with nearly 156,000 people fleeing their country since 15 December 2013.

More than 739,500 people remained internally displaced, including some 75,000 in 8 UN Protection of Civilian sites.

While the rate of new arrivals slowed down in Kenya, more than 3,000 South Sudanese were registered in Uganda and the number of arrivals also spiked in Ethiopia.

Since the outbreak of violence in Juba, South Sudan, on 15 December 2013, over 740,000 people have been displaced internally. The conflict also forced over 131,000 South Sudanese refugees to flee their homes and to cross into Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda.

Bulgaria Refugee Situation Update

21 January 2014

Bulgaria is currently hosting 9,386 asylum-seekers, according to the State Refugee Agency. While living conditions continue to improve, reception conditions remain inadequate. Asylum-seekers living in tents have been moved into buildings, heating is available in all reception centres and UNHCR is working with the authorities to install kitchens, dining rooms and laundry facilities in several centres. UNHCR is urging States participating in the Dublin Regulation to temporarily suspend transfers of asylum-seekers back to Bulgaria.

Central African Republic Emergency Update

The latest update on UNHCR's operations in the Central African Republic.

Latest statistics from the Commission mouvement de population led by IOM state that there are some 902,000 Internally Displaced people (IDPs) in the Central African Republic. 478,383 of these are in the country’s capital, Bangui.

South Sudan Emergency Update

17 January 2014

Since the outbreak of violence in Juba, South Sudan, on 15 December 2013, over 413,000 people have been displaced internally, including nearly 65,500 who have sought security in the compounds of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The conflict also forced over 84,000 South Sudanese refugees to flee their homes and to cross into Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda.
