Africa Day, 16th May, Iveagh Gardens, Dublin

UNHCR Ireland will be taking part in this year’s Africa Day, an annual event organised by Irish Aid which celebrates African culture and society and Africans living within Ireland.

With this year’s theme of ‘Food’, the UN Refugee Agency will focus on sustainable farming projects, with posters and leaflets demonstrating the organisation’s work on sustainable farming projects with refugees. Children will have the chance to plant a fruit or vegetable seed traditionally grown in Africa and take it home with them to watch it grow.

UNHCR will highlight the work of its Livelihoods Unit, which helps refugees, refugee returnees and internally displaced people to tap into their potential for self-reliance and build a platform for a better future. Investing in people’s livelihoods is important because it enhances the chances for a sustainable and durable solution, be it a person’s return to their home country, local integration in their country of refuge or resettlement in a third country. It also helps reduce the cost of aid and protection.

The event will offer an eclectic range of food, music, film, dance and art from across the African continent throughout the day, with representatives of both African and Irish communities, media groups, sports organisations and NGOs.

UNHCR benefits from a multi-year Framework Agreement with Irish Aid, which goes towards its Annual Programme Budget. The Office also benefits from Irish Aid contributions towards supplementary appeals made by the UNHCR for emergency situations.
